Day 1: Circular route Oberalppass – Andermatt 3:30*

The hiking trail begins at Oberalp Pass and ascends 300 m to Lake Toma and the source of the Rhine. The trail continues over a small mountain saddle and gently rolling hilltops before dropping down into the Maighels Valley and back to the Oberalp Pass. Return journey to Andermatt via public transport. Tip for adventurous hikers: Oberalp Pass – Pazolastock – Badushütte – Lake Toma – Oberalp Pass 5h 30

Day 2: Andermatt – Gotthard Hospice 5h 30*

Take the Postbus from Andermatt to the scenic Gotthard Pass. From here, the trail leads up to the Lucendro dam and along the water's edge to the Lucendro Pass. In a basin below the Pass, lies an idyllic little lake in which the Reuss originates. The trail continues down to the gallery of the Gotthard Pass road via Rosso di Fuori and Alpe di Fieud. You can then take the Postbus from the Galleria Banchi stop up to the Gotthard Pass.

Day 3: Gotthard Hospice – Ulrichen/Obergesteln/Oberwald 5h 30*

The Postbus will take you from the Gotthard Pass to Airolo and on through the romantic Bedretto Valley to the stop at Cruina. From here, it's a 45-minute walk to the headwaters of the Ticino. Following an ascent of around one hour you reach the highest point – the Nufenen Pass. The descent through the ever-changing landscape of the Ägene Valley takes you to Ulrichen or Obergesteln, or you could walk on to Oberwald (+45 min.). Tip: Use public transport to shorten this leg of the walk.

Day 4: Ulrichen/Obergesteln/Oberwald – Belvédère/home 6h 15*

Walking times to Belvédère depend on where you start: from Ulrichen 6.15 hours; from Obergesteln 5.45 hours; from Oberwald 5 hours. You can take the Postbus to shorten this leg of the walk. The trail first leads to Gletsch before climbing up to the Furka Pass. From here, you cross broad alpine meadows to the stone marking the source of the Rhone before continuing on down to Belvédère. Public transport will bring you back home. Option: Spend an extra night in the nostalgic Grand Hotel Glacier du Rhône in Gletsch.
