Disentis Monastery

The Benedictine monastery in Disentis is situated at one of the highest points in Graubünden's Anterior Rhine valley, at the intersection between the Lukmanier and Oberalp passes. The abbey was founded by a Franconian wandering monk, Sigisbert, with the help of a local Rhaetian monk, Placidus a Spescha, at around 7 AD.

The Disentis monastery has a rich cultural heritage. The Baroque construction demonstrates the great confidence of the post-reformation period and is a striking feature of the landscape. The monastic building complex was later extended to include a school building. The history of Disentis is very well documented. The town has a comprehensive Romansh library and the well-structured monastery museum provides a valuable insight into the cultural and natural history of the region.

Monastery life aside, the most important function of the monastery nowadays involves running the monastery school. The Disentis monastery provides secondary school education for children in the outer region of Surselva. The construction of the new girls' boarding school by the renowned Graubünden architect Gion A. Caminada has allowed the monastery to successfully combine tradition with modern life.

Disentis monastery museum

The monastery museum comprises a cultural history section and a natural history section. The cultural history exhibition showcases the history of the monastery, religious art, Christian traditions and textiles. The oldest finds date back to 1200 AD. Most exhibits originate from Graubünden. Exotic cultural treasures are also displayed as part of special exhibitions. The natural history exhibition is located on the gallery level of the monastery museum. This is where visitors can admire crystals and minerals from the region. Native animal species are also exhibited here.

Seminars in the monastery

Seminars are also held in the Disentis monastery, for instance with Abbot Daniel Schönbächle. Understanding one's own personality structure and tackling stress and uncertainties that arise in everyday life are just some of the many topics addressed in the seminars. More information and registration details are available from the ZfU International Business School.
